Where Did All The Heroes Go?

Do we even need heroes today?

When I was young, back in the 1950’s we had lots of heroes from Superman, the Lone Ranger, the Cisco Kid, Roy Rogers and in church we heard of great men of the Bible like King David, King Solomon, Gideon and Jesus.

I think when we are kids it does not take much to qualify as a hero but as we get older our points of view change and so does our criteria for a hero.

What makes a hero? A good man or woman, a Spiritual Giant, a strong sense of right and wrong, just, fair and willing to stand up for those who can’t.

Some people look to politicians for their heroes.  Some may be but most are not.  Heroes are not always born to greatness some just happen to be at the right place at the right time. They are sometimes created by the pressures of life or war. Some of them are not recognized until after there passing.  They don’t have to be a male either. Just look at the life of Mother Theresa.

Lots of times we create an image of a certain person from what we read about them and only later do we find that their life was built on lies or misrepresentations. Very rarely do we find that gem that becomes a real hero. Just look at some in the news lately.

My father was one of my heroes.  Though he never really played sports with me much he did teach me how to fish and hunt and how to properly shoot a rifle, shotgun and a pistol.  i also learned how to properly carry and maintain my weapons. He also taught me how to maintain and repair cars, appliances, lawn mowers and how to be respectful towards all women. Most importantly he taught me how to be a man of your word, something I see missing in today’s World.

Yes, we need heroes more than ever today.  Every child growing up needs a hero so if you are a parent be a hero to your child or children.  As an adult be someone’s hero.
